Labeling Systems

These tutorials are about Information Architecture in Web Design.

This tutorial has three (3) sub-sections.

Labels

The last step of thinking through the structure of you Web site is the development of labels for the site. Labels are critical to understanding and successfully navigating the site.

Labels include things such as the names of your links and the names of your pages and section headings. They help to orient the user and keep them on track, as well as to inform them about the contents of the section they are in. When first introduced to new content, people don't read -- they skim. The labels are what draw people in so that they stop skimming and read in more detail.

This section takes a look at the basics of Web-based labeling systems.
